what can you do to if you get charged back? How can sellers protect themselves?

There are a few things I have learnt over the years:
1. Accept payments using paypal and google checkout only. No direct credit card payment/bank transfers/money orders or Western Union money transfers

2. Google checkout has a pretty good fraud detection system. Till date we have not had a fraudulent transaction with them. For paypal, only ship to a confirmed paypal address.

3. An exception to rule #2 above is if the purchase occurs on ebay. Then paypal provides protection for unconfirmed addresses also.

4. Do not ship to the following countries: Russia, Vietnam, Nigeria etc.

5. For items shipping to US, always do a google map check and make sure it is not an address for a forwarding agency/UPS Store etc.

6. For low feedback buyers on ebay, use ebay's advanced search feature to find out what else this user bought. If the user is buying a number of expensive items from multiple sellers then its probably fraudulent.

7. For low feedback buyers on ebay, try to call their phone ( use skype credit ) and speak to them before shipping.

8. For transactions on ebay check the users feedback to see when was the last item purchased. If the last purchase occurred a few months/years ago then also you should call. It maybe an inactive account hijacked by someone.

9. Never accept an offer for a pickup ( where buyer pays for shipping ). It is easy for the buyer to then redirect to whatever address s/he choses.

10. Do not use USPS for international shipping. They suck.

Hope this helps.

The buyer will pay with a fraudulent check. You send the item promptly but days later you find that the check bounces, leaving you with nothing.
