Details:	I fraud-check orders that look suspicious (different shipping and billing address, large order with expedited shipping, etc) and this woman’s two transactions dated the 25th and 26th of June looked very suspicious. One is under ‘Adriana Palomo’ and the other, ‘Palomo Adriana’. Both billing addresses are different and out-of-state. First order is billed to a Sue M** in Illinois. I first attempted to contact the “customer” at the phone number provided at the time of purchase, where a woman with a heavy Spanish accent yelled “wrong number, wrong number” and hung up. I then contacted RBS Worldpay, who then contacted her issuing bank (53rd bank in Ohio) and got the customer on the line to verify whether the customer had made the purchase. The customer denied having placed the order and had her card cancelled immediately (I refunded her purchase). Next order is billed to a Rhonda C** in Kentucky. I tried to contact the customer at the phone number provided, which was a Google voice number, and the other party denied knowing Adriana. I then contacted RBS Worldpay, who confirmed the 53rd bank was their issuing bank as well. The agent I got on the line this time at 53rd bank’s fraud department was not cooperative and said she did not have the authority to tell me if the customer says yes or no. I then searched on the internet and found that the shipping address for the order (1414 Geronimo Dr) was Southwest University in El Paso, TX, where an Adriana Palomo is listed as employed. The other (6869 Enid Ct) is an apartment complex. I called and got Adriana on the phone, who responded affirmatively that she was anticipating a package from our company. When I informed her the credit card was stolen, she became flustered, began to stammer and said she did not know what I meant. I advised her to contact whoever was sending her this “gift.” I figured that would stop her but we soon received two chargebacks for orders placed in May 2013 that had slipped through, again, going to Southwest University. I tried to contact her employer and was hung up on by the HR department. I finally got in touch with a detective at the El Paso PD who moved forward with the case -- we were not the only company she had done this to. When questioned she claimed she had no idea what was happening and that someone used her as a mule, but they found text messages to the provider of stolen credit cards where she acknowledged the scam and our product was found when they searched her apartment. She is still free and I'm not sure of the outcome of the case, but keep an eye out...

That was some pretty well-done detective work on your part.

As far as her still being free, the truth is, even if the amount of the theft raises it to felony theft, she isn't going to do any time unless she's been convicted of this several times before. Add in the fact that the criminal is a woman, and the odds of her serving any jail time are almost zero. She probably pleaded down to a misdemeanor and was given probation. Putting people in jail costs money - courts try to avoid it whenever they can.
